Red foxes are one of the most charismatic and enigmatic mammals in Britain. With their long history of persecution through fox hunting they are very secretive in rural countryside.
During summer I spent a lot of evenings on the verges of the arable rapeseed fields near my home watching for hares and leverets. One evening after watching a leveret in the field margin it suddenly reared upright on its hind legs, sniffed the air and dived into the rapeseed crop. Moments afterwareds this large dog fox trotted out from the otherside of the verge on the leveret's trail. He paused still for a moment and we exchanged looks of recognition, before he calmly trotted on purposefully into the crop after the leveret. It was a very special moment and one that I will never forget.
